Reasons for Caution with "Underrated" Batteries:

  • Misleading Capacity Claims: Some less reputable sellers might label batteries with a higher Ampere-hour (Ah) rating than they actually possess. This "underrating" in reverse (claiming more than actual) can lead to you paying for a battery that won't provide the expected backup time.
  • Substandard Build Quality: Underrated batteries might be manufactured with lower quality materials, thinner plates, or less electrolyte, which can significantly reduce their lifespan and performance.
  • Poor Deep Discharge Capability: Tall tubular batteries are valued for their ability to handle deep discharge cycles common in inverter and solar power systems in Nigeria due to frequent power outages. Underrated ones might not withstand these deep discharges as advertised, leading to premature failure. Genuine tall tubular batteries are known for their resilience to deep discharges.
  • Shorter Lifespan: Due to inferior materials and construction, underrated batteries are likely to have a significantly shorter lifespan than genuine, well-rated tubular batteries. While good quality tubular batteries can last for 4-6 years, underrated ones might fail much earlier.
  • Compromised Safety: Substandard batteries might not have the necessary safety features, increasing the risk of leaks, overheating, or even explosions in extreme cases.
  • Lack of Warranty or Support: Underrated brands or sellers might not offer a reliable warranty or after-sales support, leaving you with no recourse if the battery fails prematurely.
  • Poor Performance in Nigerian Conditions: Nigeria's high temperatures can stress batteries. Underrated batteries might not be designed to handle these conditions effectively, leading to reduced performance and lifespan.
